Hump Day Wednesday - 6 June 2001

Mahalo, Dan Bowman. Posting? You mean Daynoters are supposed to post everyday? Well whack me upside the head and call me Kaniala, I guess I should get back to posting. <G> Note, however, that since I do not have access to the Internet, during my practicum, updates will come sparsely and after the fact.

First Hawaiian, First. I guess I should start with the fact I started my practicum last Friday. It's with First Hawaiian Bank, Financial Management Group, Trust Division, Investments/Operations, Operations.

I got placed there through the good offices of Professor Richard Pratt. Dr. Pratt is a friend of Robbie Alm, the Head of the Group. My first day was basically an orientation into the different departments within the Group. I will be working closely with the Operations Division which has gone through massive down sizing within the last couple of years.

Since my area of specialization is organizational change, this should be an ideal place to start. And so it is. The group outsourced some of their back office operations and by so doing, reduced their employees by about half. So how do you reorganize your office in the face of that kind of change?

One of the ways is to throw the traditional job descriptions out the window and cross-train each employee to handle any of the transactions that the group must perform. Thus empowered, the managers are able to distribute the work load evenly among the employees, thus maximizing the available resources. For the employees, the cross-training gives them a complete picture of what the group does, and more importantly, the relationships between the parts, and the parts to the whole.

No, we are not talking about Nirvana (the place, not the group). Change is always difficult, even when the specter of empty desks is staring you in the face. But the managers were able to clearly explain the urgent need to reorganize, and the employees rose to the occasion. The manager who came up with the idea and implemented it, Roscoe Shigeta, is rightly praised for his work.

Aloha!
