Bad Things? I recently attended the funerals of two of my wife's relatives. Each died about a week apart. As a Christian, we have the hope of eternal life through the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Still, not having the strongest of faiths, sometimes I wonder about the pain people go through before they are allowed to rest. Yes, I know, we will all die at some point. But why are some given such a heavy burden to carry until then?
On the other hand, the program for the second funeral service had a copy of Psalm 23 in it. And as I was sitting there in the pew thinking about the life that had passed, I was struck by one of the verses (Psalm 23:4): "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me." Notice that it does not say you will never have to walk through that valley - only that when you do, you need not be afraid - for God is with you.
My wife related to me how her uncle, who withstood the pain of cancer for over a year, said that he was not a strong man. That he did not know if he could continue to withstand the pain. But day after day. Month after month. He fought the good fight. He carried on until the end - victorious over the cancer that took his body, but not his soul or his spirit.
If only we could all have such courage! Aloha Uncle, may you rest in peace.
